FBR Digital Invoicing in Pakistan: What Businesses Need to Know

FBR Digital Invoicing is the Federal Board of Revenue's move to real-time, electronically validated sales-tax invoices. Instead of printing an invoice and reporting it later, registered businesses transmit each invoice to FBR's system, which validates it and returns a unique identifier before the invoice is issued to the customer. This guide explains, in plain language, what that means in practice.

What is a digital (electronic) invoice?

A digital invoice is a sales-tax invoice created, transmitted and stored electronically in the format FBR requires, and validated by FBR's system at (or near) the time it is issued. The goal is a single, tamper-resistant record of every taxable supply, shared between the seller, the buyer and the tax authority.

Who does it apply to?

FBR has been extending digital invoicing in phases, beginning with larger and specified categories of sales-tax-registered businesses and widening over time. Because the scope and deadlines change, the safest approach is to confirm your current obligation directly on the FBR website or with your tax advisor rather than relying on older summaries.

How the process works

Two practical routes to compliance

You do not have to rip out the systems you already use. In practice there are two common paths:

  1. Use accounting software with digital invoicing built in. If you are choosing or replacing your books, a cloud accounting system that generates FBR-validated invoices directly removes a whole layer of manual work. Iris Accounts is an example of cloud accounting with FBR Digital Invoicing native to the platform.
  2. Connect the system you already have. If you run QuickBooks, Odoo, Oracle, SAP or even a simple spreadsheet, a connector can generate FBR-validated e-invoices from your existing data โ€” protecting your current investment. Iris Connect is built for exactly this.

Common mistakes to avoid

Digital invoicing is less daunting than it first appears: once your system is connected and tested, compliant e-invoices become part of your normal billing flow rather than an extra task.
